Founded in 2001, Family Independence Initiative is headquartered in Oakland, California, operates a second location in Boston, Massachusetts, and currently serves approximately 300 families in Oakland, San Francisco, and Boston. Through their direct engagement programs, Family Independence Initiative organizes peer support groups, where families set personal goals such as building their savings, or improving their health, and then report their monthly progress into the system's database.
