Subsequently expanded by a group of local residents, the garden officially opened in 1946 as the Queens Botanical Garden Society. In 1961, the Queens Botanical Garden was moved to its current location at the northeast corner of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, taking several of its original plantings, such as the two blue atlas cedars that still frame the garden’s main entrance.
