Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) of Occidental, California, is on a mission to cultivate ecological literacy and build the capacity of public agencies, schools, urban social justice organizations, Native American tribes, and others to cultivate and design resilience to mounting ecological, economic, and social challenges. An 80-acre research, education, advocacy, demonstration, and community-organizing center, Occidental Arts and Ecology Center was founded in 1994 and consists of its organic gardens, Wildlands Preserve, and onsite intentional community. Inspired by nature and artistic expression, OAEC helps place-based communities develop strategies for community resilience and the restoration of biological and cultural diversity. It does so by investing in partnerships and projects that address the root causes of today’s crises; by hosting retreats and strategic planning meetings for ecological and social justice groups; and by inviting additional visitors for volunteer days, site tours, gardening, courses, heirloom seed swaps, public presentations, and more.
