About Karis Community

Researched & Written by Katie Shepherd on the FlexJobs Team

Karis Community is a therapeutic, non-clinical, and minimally monitored residential living community for women and men who are learning to live with or recovering from serious and stubborn mental illnesses. Karis works with these men and women to help transition them to independent living. Karis is the Greek word meaning grace, which embodies the Karis Community organization as it allows adults dealing with mental illness to be supported, challenged, and restored. Karis regularly works with those struggling with bipolar mood disorder and severe depression from ages 21 and older, serving about fifty persons each year with an average stay of fifteen months. The mission of Karis Community is to provide a stable, transitional living opportunity for those struggling with mental illness, and to show them basic life and social skills needed to live independently. The goals of the organization is to empower the individuals who seek help at Karis, to assist them in developing independent living skills, to provide an uplifting environment, to focus on visitors’ personal growth, self-improvement and self-reliance, and to show them that they are fully capable of living fulfilling lives on their own. Karis was originally founded as the Shalom Community in 1975, and was changed to Karis Community in 1978 to focus on those struggling with mental health issues. Karis Community offers part-time job opportunities in Denver, Colorado.
