Oklahoma, located in the south-central U.S., is both a midwestern and a southern state with cultural influences from both regions. Oklahoma was originally designated as a home for Native American groups who were displaced from other parts of the continent, and by 1890, over 30 Native American tribes and nations had settled in the region. When the area was later opened up to settlers, major land runs ensued, and the state of Oklahoma was admitted to the union in 1907. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma’s capital, is one of the largest cities in the U.S. and is known for its cowboy culture, as well as its significant oil, natural gas, and petroleum products industries. Oklahoma’s second-largest metro area is Tulsa, recognized as the arts and cultural center of the state. As one of the country’s largest natural gas and crude oil producing states, Oklahoma has the second-highest number of active drilling rigs. In addition to the energy sector, Oklahoma’s economy is based in the aviation, transportation, electronics, food processing, and telecommunications industries. Oklahoma boasts many institutions of higher education, including Oklahoma State University, the University of Tulsa, Oral Roberts University, the University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Christian University. Many of Oklahoma’s colleges and universities have posted flexible employment in the past, and several Oklahoma-based companies have started offering flexible positions, including Integris, Teleflora, Tulsa Tech, Initial Call, and ProRecruiters, to name a few. Professionals living and working in Oklahoma will find a diverse terrain with plains, forests, lakes, and mountains, all offering many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Part of the “Bible Belt,” Oklahoma is a religious state with a low population density and a low cost of living.
